In the fall of 2008, TEAM Punta Gorda’s Maritime Development Committee embraced the rich history of Charlotte Harbor by creating a Waterfront Master Plan for the city. A copy of this plan can be seen by clicking here.
The plan involves elements that fundamentally transform the waterfront and link it more fully with the downtown retail district. The backbone of this plan is the Harborwalk, a pathway along the harbor which can accommodate walkers and bicyclists and which itself is an attraction to our community. The Harborwalk is part of the City of Punta Gorda’s “Ring Around The City” pedestrian pathway system.
In addition to the Harborwalk project, the TEAM Maritime Committee is also focused on projects which enhance Punta Gorda as a Boating Destination. Over the course of the next two years our plan is to develop the west side anchorage to include; a dredged harbor landing, seven new dinghy docks, showers, boaters lounge, Laundromat, Wi-Fi throughout the harbor, and a pump out boat to accommodate boats in the anchorage.
The Committee is also working with the Punta Gorda Boater’s Alliance to better promote Punta Gorda as a boating destination. The Boater’s Alliance has created a website (www.boat2puntagorda.org) which outlines the many advantages of boating to our area. The city has no budget to promote the waterfront destination therefore, the Maritime Committee in cooperation with the Boaters Alliance plans to find ways to promote our waterfront community through developing related website links, merchants coop advertising, and working with the city and county Chambers of Commerce to find funding in the future.
